Shrimp Recipes – Chow Mein

shrimp chow mein recipe

Use some shrimp in your Chow Mein.

Chow Mein is one of the most delicious shrimp recipes and also widely known worldwide.  Here is an authentic Chinese recipe that you can make at home:

Ingredients:

1 lb noodles

1 ½ lb lean pork or beef

3 Chinese dried mushrooms

5 tbsp vegetable oil

1 clove garlic, crushed

3 spring onions

3 oz shredded cabbage or celery

1 oz bamboo shoots

½ tsp salt

2 ½ tbsp soya sauce

2 tbsp dry sherry

2 tbsp shelled shrimps

Pinch of sugar

Boil the noodles until soft. Drain and rinse under cold running water to prevent stickiness.

Slice the meat into matchstick strips. Soak dried mushrooms in warm water for ½ hours and slice them into strips or shreds.

Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a large frying pan. Add garlic, onion, cabbage, bamboo shoots and half the salt and stir fry for two minutes or so over a high heat. Remove and put aside.

Add two tablespoons of oil into the same pan. When very hot, add the meat and mushrooms and stir fry over high heat for three minutes (only one minute if you’ve chosen beef). Add the soya sauce and sugar and half the sherry and stir fry for a further minute. Remove with a slotted spoon and put aside.

Add the remaining oil to the pan and then the noodles and the shrimps to be stir fried with the gravy and oil left in the pan from previous fryings. When the noodles are heated through and browned all over with gravy and oil (about one and half minutes), add the remaining salt, half the meat and half the cooked vegetables which had been put aside.

After a further minute of slow stir frying, dish out onto a warmed serving dish.

Now return the remainder of the vegetables and meat to the same pan together with the rest of the sherry. After a few sizzling turns over high heat (for about fifteen seconds), spoon the mixed contents of the pan as garnish over the noodles and serve. Sometimes the gravy flavored noodles are even more delicious than the meat.

Chinese shrimp recipes are absolutely delicious, as they cook the seashell in so many different ways. Chow Mein is one of the most well known recipes, but there are others that are also as tasty and sometimes it is fun to try out new dishes for the whole family.
