College can be very expensive, but there are many ways to save money on your education. If your parents make below a certain amount of money or if you support yourself and don’t make a lot of money, you could apply for financial aid.
You can get scholarships for high school seniors at your school or around the community. In fact, you can get a lot of money for college through scholarships. Before you apply for loans, follow these other tips to help you save money for college.
First, decrease the amount of money you need for college. This is a lot easier than finding money. Start at a community college. If you do this, you could literally save tens of thousands of dollars. You’ll pay a fraction of what you would at a private school for tuition, and you’ll save on room and board.
You can always transfer to your ‘dream school’ later. Also, don’t overlook state school. Many people look at them as ‘low’ but the only difference between them and many other schools is that the government helps pay for some of it. Unless you’re a genius that must go to an Ivy League school, look for a top state school.
After you’ve cut back your expenses, start saving money on your own. So many people look for scholarships, financial aid, and loans to pay for school. They completely overlook work. I knew a lot of kids in college who didn’t work while in school but just worked a little over the summer to pay for fun stuff during the year.
Get a job while your in school and use the summers and the time leading up to college save for tuition, room, board, and books. While you’re in high school, instead of blowing all your money on food, the movies, and concerts, save it for college. You can spend some of it, but put as much as you can toward college. Also, work full time over the summer to make as much money as possible.
